Hello everyone, I hope I am posting this on the correct subreddit. If not, please redirect me, but I am in need of some serious help.
A little backstory. Last year during the lockdown, the company I work full time for, gave me the option to keep my job and work from home instead. I obviously took it, and since I was already familiar with remote work, I decided to work from my laptop I normally use for everything else. The only thing I needed, was the key to a program we use on every single computer in the office that’s needed for work. For it to be installed, I had to use teamviewer and our IT guy connected to my laptop and set the program up for me. I was doing something else while he was working, so I didn’t necessarily see what exactly he was doing.
Fast forward to a year later, I am bringing this same laptop with me to the office every single day. A few days ago, me and a coworker were watching netflix during work and he joked about us being monitored. We thought it would be funny if we googled “ways to know you’re being monitored” and lo and behold, we found out we were in fact being monitored (shocker). There’s TightVNC installed on every single computer in the office.
Now, I don’t care if they see me being on reddit or netflix during work hours, that’s fine and it is allowed. What I am concerned and angry about, is that there’s been TightVNC installed on my personal laptop as well, for god knows how long. I did not sign anything, I didn’t agree on it being on my laptop, noone even mentioned it to me and I didn’t consent to it being there. I even checked my contract and it’s not mentioned anywhere.
How can I bring this up to the right people? I’m pretty sure this is illegal.
I would also like to know what information they potentially now have about me. What do they see with TightVNC? What can it be used for and can it be harmful? I have everything on that laptop, art and work I do for other companies, personal information, passwords, all my work for college as I am a student, etc… I am really worried and scared.
I tried looking online, and there’s not much information about it. Can anyone help me get some answers or redirect me? I would really appreciate it.
