I have no problems with Indians whatsoever, even have many Indian friends.
What I don’t understand is the search results:
- Youtube algorithm favours compsci lecture videos in Indian which I got no clue what they are talking about.
- When I try translating something, Google always asks to translate it to ~~Indian~~ Hindi even though I have never used it.
- Salary on glassdoor is in rupees.
- The jobs I get on Angelco are in India.
- JUST TO CLARIFY, the search results are in English. What I meant with google translate is when I launch the website and try to translate anything, Hindi is automatically selected like i would have expected “Detect Language”.
I am living in the UK and its pretty hard for me to understand why this is happening. Is there a way to teach websites (or Google) that I am not Indian and don’t know the language nor the currency?
EDIT: Sorry for mixing the country and the language!
UPDATE 1: Checked the router (from the ISP’s app settings) and labelled all the devices. No intruder found!
UPDATE 2: Entered Google’s DNS to make sure the problem is not because of networks.
UPDATE 3: Now, time for some software adjustments!
-
Edited the ad settings on my google account and turned off anything related to India (which I had almost none which is weird…).
-
Turned off Location History under Activity Controls. I checked the data (as much they allow) and it’s not related to India in any way.
-
Adjusted the Search results to United Kingdom, and changed the language to English.
~~Aaaaand it’s still the same. Will have to nuke my google account from existence.~~ Will delete cache and go deeper when I have more time.
Job salary has changed to £, unless I specify the location in angelco I still get jobs in India so the bias continues. Maybe the website has many job offers from India and I am perceiving it as bias? Need to do more research about this.
UPDATE 4: u/deelowe suggested I might have a GEOIP problem. Looked up with one of the services and it’s shows that I am from India. Seems like that’s something very hard to change… Time to use a VPN!
UPDATE 5: ISP changed the IP, the geolocation region is back to UK! (Only lasted a few hours, now back to India…)
